    The end of GitHub?

News broke out that Microsoft purchases GitHub. A search on the web with mentioning of migrating to GitLab. What's your view?

Has Microsoft done bad things in the past, oh, 10 years? I guess, what's the problem?

The FOSS purists, who refuse to be associated with anything Microsoft out of principle, will flee for the hills. The rest of us will wait and see.

There are enough MS shops out there that GitHub should continue to be a viable platform for years to come, if that is Microsoft's intention.

I expect the entire thing to be rolled into Azure, and the on premises option to no longer be developed/supported at some point.

I've seen a lot of "The sky is falling" threads on various forums because of this. I think they are all overreacting.

I'm sure some will move to other platforms, but I don't think Git will fall or become something else entirely.

I agree with blargoe. A lot of the FOSS purist folks have already started moving their small projects to GitLab. Any real useful sized project is likely to wait and see as it's no small matter.

I've had both for my personal stuff for a few years, but I'm not a heavy user. Dot files and few scripts. We use self hosted GitHub at work so I'd be interested to see how that works out.

I think MS is already the largest contributor to github, I doubt they'll be destroying it anytime soon.

Don't know why everyone is so upset. Microsoft has been strongly pro open source for several years now and I wouldn't worry about it.

Because some people are still fixated on writing "M$" and haven't paid attention to the news in awhile.

I used to use GitHub until I switched over to BitBucket. The latter provides private repos for free. GitHub, on the other hand, charged for private repos the last time I checked.

    What Blargoe said

I used to be one of the FOSS kids. Microsoft has changed substantially in the last decade, and their innovation in the cloud area is impressive, they're up there with Amazon, and they're here to stay, for a long time!

While git is really great, Github isn't even all that good anyways. Like what bjpeter said, Bitbucket is better for a simple and free private repo.

End of GitHub? I thought it would be a boost for LinkedIn. Allowing people to link their profiles and let recruiters see portfolios.

Microsoft already had own similar solution, which was abandoned and closed - codeplex. Code neutrality on github is lost. I don't see reasons to stay on github and pay to microsoft.

P.S. In process of code migration from github to Gitlab.

Purist will flee to other solutions. In some way I heard that GitHub needed a major "sponsor" to keep their business model viable... At least, Microsoft have deep pocket.

They can't do more wrong that Oracle.
